I like Avast more than most other ones, but they are getting very annoying with popups like yours and ones about never being safe when not using a VPN.Intego is a veteran antivirus provider which has been defending Macs for over two decades now, so if there’s any software maker that knows what kind of security Apple machines need, it’s this company. It's just a sales pitch for them to try and get you to pay for more features. If you go into Avast settings you can edit notification settings. It takes more processes to do this, and typically costs you money to offer this level of protection. Your pop-up originally was referring to the fact any free AV will not offer real-time protection. Standby puts the disk or solid state drive to power save mode (not used). No, the scan can not run in standby mode. Also after about 4-5 years of having this and tons of updates is it better to delete it and download the latest version? Maybe it doesn’t matter? I’d still like to know if a long scan will continue when your computer goes into standby mode.

In order to do their real-time scans and so forth, antivirus programs have to get their hooks fairly deep into the operating system and in the past I've had many unpleasant experiences with real-time protection features breaking on OS updates, or seriously slowing down the system, or insistently demanding that I buy a paid upgrade and refusing to uninstall cleanly.ġ2 hours! Does the scan continue while you are off the computer and it is “sleeping “ or in standby?Īlso what do you think of my previous post where I describe the pop up when I open Avast. I wouldn't buy the paid version of either, not because I'm a cheapskate, but because I believe the extra paid features are basically misfeatures. I also do a single-file scan of any software I download from any place other than the Apple App Store. (I remove them so that I won't somehow accidentally open them or forward them). I've never found any active viruses but I often find viruses within my email, in attachments to spam mail Avast finds them, Malwarebytes does not. A complete scan, including external drives, with Avast takes about twelve hours or so. I run Malwarebytes much more often because the scan is much faster. I have both Malwarebytes and Avast, in both cases the free version.
